Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2007 | | Filed Under: Personal stuff, Relationship stuff

Well, I’m a big hypocrite. On the one hand I’ve always thought Valentine’s Day was pretty dumb. It was fun when I was kid and could hand out valentines to my classmates and eat candy hearts and pink cookies, but now that I’m an adult (or at least close to being one) and have been in a relationship for 8 years, the whole thing seems pretty pointless. But despite that rational thinking, the irrational, emotional side of me just wants some pretty flowers!

The one concession I could make to the rational side of my brain was to tell my boyfriend to buy the flowers at Costco, where they are about a quarter of the price than if you buy them from a flower shop. They’re just flowers. They’re going to die. I can’t reconcile spending over $100 for something like that. So yesterday afternoon he came home with a dozen (reasonably priced) roses. They are so pretty and I was so happy to get them, but also a little bit disgusted with myself. Oh well, I guess the rational and irrational sides of my brain will always be at war.

Actually, though, my birthday is on Tuesday, so Valentine’s has always felt like a pre-birthday for me. And my boyfriend and I always celebrate them together anyway, so I guess that’s why I don’t feel so bad for being weak and wanting flowers. They’re not just for a pointless holiday, but for my birthday as well, which is NOT a pointless holiday. See, all it takes is one good rationalization.

Tomorrow we will go out and have a nice dinner to celebrate the two holidays, which will be nice. But it’s next week that I really can’t wait for. On Monday, I’ll finally be receiving my birthday present, which is a shiny new camera, so I can practice my new hobby and I’ll be getting my king cake. Yes, a king cake because next Tuesday is not only my birthday, it’s also Mardi Gras.

Unfortunately, I haven’t lived in a place that celebrates Mardi Gras since I was a kid, but I still have fond memories of all the parades I went to and the beads (which I still have somewhere) and the king cakes, so when I found out it was on my birthday again this year (it’s always the day before Ash Wednesday, so the date changes every year), I just had to get a king cake. This is what I love about the internet: You can buy a real New Orleans king cake from a real New Orleans bakery and have it shipped to you overnight so it’s still fresh and yummy. How great is that?

Next week is going to be awesome, but unfortunately, I have to get through this week first. Is it just me or is this week going by really slowly?

  1. Those king cakes look delish! How was yours anyway?

I love that my birthday falls on Lei Day which is a Hawaiian holiday of course. Every year I tell myself I’m going to order a traditional Haupia cake - because its from Hawaii and taste amazing, but I never do. I’m hoping I can do it this year.
