Reading is fundamental
Here’s the little (and I mean little) blurb on the back of this book:
Thanks to “Ugly Betty”, we’re finally ready to read a love story about a couple that isn’t sleek, slick, tucked, pulled or plastic.
That made me want to read the book. I like Ugly Betty, so that made me think that this book was going to have the same tone: quirky fun with a lot of heart.
Well, it didn’t really turn out that way. Quirky? Check. Heart? Double Check. Fun? Not so much. It’s actually a pretty darn depressing book. But the good thing is that it’s short, about 200 pages, so it goes by fast and you don’t really want to put it down. If it had been long and depressing I would have hated this book, but short and depressing is ok with me, so I liked it.

Home is where the heart is
Woo Hoo! The Great De-cluttering of 2007 is complete.
What is the Great De-cluttering of 2007? Well, when I got home from vacation a few weeks ago, I could not stand the sight of my apartment. I don’t know if it was living in a hotel room for a week with only the bare necessities or living out of a suit case or maybe it wasn’t either of those things. I just knew I wanted to throw everything in my apartment away. We have SO much stuff. We don’t even use half of it. And my closets and cabinets and drawers? Oh my lord. Stuffed to the brim with crap. I decided I was going to go through EVERYTHING and either give or throw away the crap we don’t use anymore. It’s taken me two weeks but I’m finally done.

The Days of my Life
Thanksgiving went pretty well this year. It was just me and my boyfriend, we didn’t want to go anywhere since we already went on vacation earlier this month. Thanksgiving is pretty much the only day of the year that I look forward to cooking. I love making turkey and stuffing (from scratch!) and all my fav foods. So that was nice and all the food came out great. Well, not totally. We had some pie issues.
My boyfriend is always talking about having pecan pie. I despise pecans, so I’ve never made or even eaten pecan pie. (I say pecan like the northerners do - peecan - just because it always annoyed my mom and now my boyfriend who says it pecahn.) But I wanted to be nice, so I decided to use my mom’s old recipe (which I remember people raving about) and make him a pecan pie. But I guess I read the recipe wrong (it was handwritten) and the pie didn’t really turn out right. I think I put too much butter and as a result the pie never really set. It was pretty much goop with pecans in it. It looked pretty though.
Luckily, I had also made an apple pie for myself and that turned out really well. It kind of fell apart trying to get it out of the pan, but it tasted yummy, so that’s all that matters to me.

Reading is fundamental
I’m very glad I finished this book, but, man, was it hard to get started. I bought this book earlier this summer because of a recommendation from one of my favorite sites. I think I read about 3 pages and gave up on it. I consider myself quite the anglophile, and am mostly hip to the British slang these days, but British slang from the early ’80s? Not so much. Ace doss, indeed. (After reading the whole book, I think that translates to “cool shit” or something like that. Ace definitely means cool, but doss is used in a few different ways, so I’m not sure about it.) Some other snippets that threw me in the first three pages:
“Moron, grinny-zitty as ever. His bumfluff’s getting thicker, mind.”
“Moron’s my height and he’s okay but Jesus he pongs of gravy.”
Pongs of gravy? I still don’t know what the hell that means.

Support the writers of your favorite shows! Send some pencils to these asshole moguls so they’ll know how much the fans support the writers and hopefully this strike can be over sooner rather than later. Why? Because Joss says so.

Personal stuff, Stuff I'm obsessed with
This is my favorite new site. I loved the Baby-sitter’s Club books so much. They were all I read for at least two or three years starting around 4th or 5th grade. I had BSC everything. Posters all over my room, the calendar, the game. I even went all OCD and starting keeping an inventory of all my books and when I read them. I don’t remember what number I was up to when I stopped, but it was up there.
My favorite character was Stacy. I would have given anything to be Stacy. But I also liked Mary Anne since she was pretty much like me. It’s so funny to read that website, though, because Stacy is SUCH a bitch. I never once saw that. But, man, she really is a snobby bitch.

Personal stuff, The outside world
Well, I’m back from vacation and wow do I really not want to be here. I want to be back in my hotel room taking naps in the afternoon and watching the History channel (Seriously, I know everything I ever wanted to know about the Titanic and Christopher Columbus). Yes, I could do that stuff at home, but then I’d feel guilty about it. On vacation there is no guilt.
Anyway, North Carolina was stunning. We literally got there The Week The Leaves Changed. If you don’t believe me check out my photoblog where I’m posting some of the 500 pictures I took. It would have been nice to be able to go to the concert like we wanted, but we still had a good time.
Day 1 was Old Salem (click picture to see it up close). It’s the historical part of town and you can look around in the houses that have all the period furniture/decorations/tools, etc. Plus people in the clothes telling you about each place and the people that lived there. In addition that was the Museum of Decorative Arts (I could only think of my History of Decorative Arts teacher and how she would have gone batshit there) and the Museum of Antique Toys. That was a big day. My boyfriend really only liked the toy museum and I think he was fairly bored for the rest, but he was a trooper and didn’t complain.

Personal stuff
It looks like we’re sticking with North Carolina. I can’t think of any other place to go that’s within a day’s driving distance and we already have our hotel booked and everything. It’s too much stress to figure out new plans when we’re leaving in two days.
We thought about just staying here and doing all the amusement parks, but that really doesn’t sound very fun to me. I just know that if we don’t go somewhere and stay in an actual hotel, there’s no way I’ll be able to stop myself from working. If I’m home, I’ll be checking my email no matter what and that defeats the purpose of a vacation.
And it’s not like there’s nothing to do in NC, either. There’s a crapload of museums and hiking trails plus normal stuff like shops, malls and movie theaters. At the very least we can just stay in the hotel and veg. That’s what you’re supposed to do on vacation anyway, right?
Plus I just want to be somewhere ANYWHERE that I can wear a fucking sweater. I despise Florida weather so much, you don’t even know. I specifically bought new sweaters for this vacation and I’m not letting them go to waste. It won’t be freezing up there, but it’ll be cool enough for a sweater during the day and maybe even a coat at night. Woo!
I guess I just need to start packing now.

Personal stuff, Rants
Well, fuck me. I was all excited about my vacation and getting to see a Decemberists concert and guess what? They just fucking canceled the entire tour and won’t be rescheduling it. So basically we are driving 9 hours up to Nowheresville, North Carolina to be able to watch some people churn butter at Old Salem.
I cannot believe how much this sucks. We’re taking this damn vacation, though. My boyfriend already got the week off and I’ve told ALL my clients that I will be gone. I’ve been looking forward to this time off for months now. I think we still have time to cancel our hotel (which I booked TWO months ago) so now we just need to figure out where we want to go. We’re not limited to North Carolina anymore, but it still needs to be within driving distance and I need to be able to book a hotel for next week.
Anyone have any good vacation ideas? I guess it’s time to consult Dr. Google.
