The time is now

February 4, 2008 | | Filed Under: Personal stuff, Relationship stuff, Work-y stuff

Well today is the official start of Get My Shit Together 2008. I’ve let myself get unhealthy and unproductive and I’m letting work take over my life. It’s just not a good way to live, so I’m trying to change. I’m not just saying that either. Brandon is doing this with me because he’s feeling the same way.

First, we’re starting with an exercise routine. Our new apartment has a “gym” and while it leaves something to be desired, it’s a BIG improvement over the “gym” at the old apartment where ALL the machines were broken. It has an elliptical, bike, stepper and a bunch of different weight machines, which is enough for us to work with. There are two broken treadmills and we’re hoping they might get fixed or replaced soon. If not, we’ll make due.

We’re being very official about this. We made up a schedule this weekend of what exercises we’re going to do on what days. We have charts to record time/weight/reps of everything we do. We’re going to be recording our weight daily and measurements weekly. I’m going to get in shape and lose some weight dammit. I’ve gained entirely too much weight in the past few years and I need to take control now, because it’s only going to get harder as I get older. (I’m going to be 27 this month! That’s way too close to 30 for my comfort.) I’ve never been skinny and that’s not even my goal here at all, I just want to be more healthy. My goal is to get down to my high school weight (I thought I was so fat, but I was actually pretty much average), but I’d be totally happy to be even 10 or 20 pounds over that.

As for work, I’m still trying to find a way to be the most productive. I’m thinking the key is scheduling, just like we have with our exercise routine. I think I need to schedule work in the same way. Have certain days that I do certain things, Start and stop at a set time everyday, etc. That will take some trial and error, but I’m making progress. For instance, I finally cleared out my inbox today. Right now I’m just trying to keep my head afloat with all the work I have this week, so once I get some stuff out of the way, I’ll be able to slow down a bit and start planning things better.

I’m actually really excited about exercising tonight, so hopefully I can keep up that energy. I think having Brandon do this with me is the key because we can help motivate each other.

As for now, my break time is up and it’s time to get back to work.
