Done

January 24, 2008 in the early afternoon | Filed Under: Home is where the heart is, Personal stuff

Woo Hoo! As of yesterday I’m done unpacking. Didn’t I say I’d get it done in record time? I couldn’t not. Having boxes everywhere drives me crazy. I’m waiting for Brandon to build his desk, though, so there are still a few boxes left, but I’ve tucked them away so I don’t have to look at them.

I STILL haven’t gotten a refund for my damn sofa that wouldn’t fit, so I just ordered a less expensive sofa this time so I’d be under my credit limit. Since it’s less expensive I might get the matching chair and ottoman, but I definitely have to wait for the refund first and also to see if there is even room for a sofa and a chair. I’m hoping there is, because I’d like to have the chair. At least the new sofa will fit through the front hall, I measured to make sure. It’ll be here by next Tuesday. Brandon should have had time to set up his desk by then, so we should be totally done by next Tuesday.

Is it over yet?

January 21, 2008 just before lunchtime | Filed Under: Personal stuff, The Days of my Life

Seriously, it needs to be over. There is one word that describes the last week of my life. Miserable. Completely. Freaking. Miserable. And no, it’s still not over.

We’ve made a trip from Orlando to Jacksonville or vice versa almost every single day since last Sunday and we still have to go down there one last time today. We had planned to just go Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, but things never work out like you plan.

Moving Day

January 14, 2008 in the early afternoon | Filed Under: Home is where the heart is, Personal stuff

Well, yesterday was our official move-in and as expected it sucked. Lugging a car load of shit up the stairs to our new apartment about killed us, so I don’t know how we’ll be feeling on Thursday when we have a u-haul full of heavy furniture. But we were able to fit a surprising amount in our car (thanks to fold down rear seats, I love our car!). We’re trying to take the heaviest stuff in the smaller loads so that we won’t kill ourselves on Thursday. We’re doing another car load on Tuesday including two of the cats. Then we’re picking up the u-haul on Thursday and taking the rest and last cat (shh, the new apartment management thinks we only have two). We STILL have to come back here on Saturday to clean the shit out of this apartment or they are going to charge us an arm and a leg. That makes 4 trips in one week. It’s only two hours (one way), but I’m already tired of the damn drive.

I just want this to be OVER. I still have so much packing to do, though. And boxes are freaking expensive! We’ve never had to buy boxes before because my boyfriend used to work at a store and we could take the old boxes their products were delivered in. We brought up all our books and I literally dumped them out on the middle of the floor so that we could bring the boxes back and reuse them. It’s going to suck having to pick up and reorganize my books, but I am NOT paying hundreds of dollars for some damn cardboard. It’s ridiculous. I brought the rest of the stuff in old Target bags. I knew there was a reason I was keeping those.

No time to breathe

January 7, 2008 mid-afternoon | Filed Under: Home is where the heart is, Personal stuff

I can’t believe how fast this is happening. We drove up there yesterday and signed the papers for our new apartment. It’s about 50 times nicer than our current place (skylights, wood floors, nicer carpet, screened porch, fireplace, more cabinets and closets), though in some ways not as nice (no icemaker, horrible ’70s looking light fixtures, smaller bathroom, cramped kitchen, no ceiling fans). I hope we’ll like it there, but if not we only have to be there for a year. The management there seem nice and competent. I cannot even begin to tell you the shit our current apartment management has put us through, so it will nice to get away from those idiots.

We’re “moving in” next Sunday, but not really. Our plan is to take up one load in the car that day, then we will take another load on Tuesday and then on Thursday we will rent a u-haul and take the rest. Since my boyfriend will be doing most of the heavy lifting (and lugging it up to our 2nd floor apartment), he doesn’t want to kill himself doing it all in one day, which I don’t blame him for.

New year, new city

December 31, 2007 mid-afternoon | Filed Under: Home is where the heart is, Personal stuff

Holy Shit. It’s crazy how you can be going on with your life and you think you’re the most boring person ever and you’re stuck and blah blah blah. And then one day, BOOM, everything’s different.

Let me take you through the last 5 days of my life:

Last Wednesday: My boyfriend has a phone interview (while driving to the movie theater, no less) for the job he pre-interviewed for before Christmas. He is unofficially offered the job right there. (Then we went to see Juno, which I LOVED and you should go see right now.)

Last Thursday: We discussed it and decided it was the best opportunity he’d gotten so far. The money is a bit lower then he wanted, but it’s still WAY higher than he’s making at his TWO current jobs. He unofficially accepts their offer.

Annnd we’re back

December 24, 2007 mid-afternoon | Filed Under: Personal stuff

We got in late last night. The trip wasn’t that bad, but I think it’s shortness was the key. If we had stayed longer, it would have been pretty bad. My boyfriend’s parents are ok in small doses.

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way:

Ridiculous

December 18, 2007 around lunchtime | Filed Under: Personal stuff, Rants

That’s what this trip is going to be.

It turns out that my boyfriend’s parents are basically broke. They aren’t going to be having “Christmas” for themselves until January. (Which is I guess when they will have some disposable income?) So they won’t even be giving each other Christmas presents when we’re up there.

WTF? Why are we even going? They guilted us into coming by sending us $200 of their own money (which they can’t afford). Then when we get up there, they are just going to be watching us open presents (that they bought for us even though they can’t afford it).

We tried to give back the $200 but they won’t take it, of course. I just feel really really bad about this whole situation. I don’t want to take their money. I don’t want presents from them if it means they can’t pay their bills. It’s totally unnecessary. The really sad thing is that (as per usual) they will be giving us a bunch of cheapo crappy gifts that we will never use and their money could (and should) be going to more important things like, I don’t know, being able to feed themselves!

Screwed

December 14, 2007 mid-afternoon | Filed Under: Personal stuff

This trip has officially become entirely too complicated. First of all, my boyfriend’s mom has to work on Christmas so we’re having “Christmas” on Friday the 21st. Which means we have to leave next Thursday and my boyfriend will have to take two days off of work (which he can’t really afford after our week long vacation last month).

Besides that, we realized today that we’ve completely screwed ourselves as far as presents. His mother wants to do the whole “sit-around-the-tree-and-feign-surprise-at-lame-gifts” thing. (And her gifts are lame. I present to you Exhibit A: a garlic press.) You know, ’cause it’s “Christmas.” Well, remember how my boyfriend told her originally that we couldn’t come up because we didn’t have any money? And then she immediately sent us money in order to guilt us into coming up there? Well guess what we bought ourselves for Christmas? I’m getting a shiny new camera and my boyfriend’s getting a PSP (Playstation Portable). Yeah. Both of those items come in at around $200 each. “Yeah, boyfriend’s mom, we were sooo broke that we went out and spent $400 on superfluous things for ourselves.” (And really, it’s a lot more than $400 after you add in some video games, books and DVDs.)

Now, in my defense we didn’t actually PAY for any of that stuff. We really DON’T have an extra $500 of completely expendable money. But it’s Christmas and we splurge on ourselves at Christmas. (I splurge on myself because I was a spoiled only-child who got whatever she wanted, a tradition I want to keep alive, and I MAKE my boyfriend splurge on himself because he had a shitty childhood and NEVER got ANYTHING he wanted (Lame Christmas present Exhibit B and C: a box of condoms and some socks. I’m not making this up! I was there!) ) And really, that’s what the awesomeness that is Bill Me Later is for.

Not home for the Holidays

December 11, 2007 in the early afternoon | Filed Under: Personal stuff, Rants, Relationship stuff

We’ve just been guilted into going up to visit my boyfriend’s family for Christmas. I really just wanted to stay here and have a low key Christmas, but now we’re stuck driving 20 hours and having to deal with his massive family.

My boyfriend agreed with me about not wanting to go and gave his mom the excuse that we didn’t have enough money to make the trip (which we kinda don’t). Well she called yesterday saying that she WORKED OVERTIME so that she could GIVE us the money to get up there. There’s no response to that. So now we have to go. Blurg.

I heart the BSC

November 16, 2007 just before lunchtime | Filed Under: Personal stuff, Stuff I'm obsessed with

This is my favorite new site. I loved the Baby-sitter’s Club books so much. They were all I read for at least two or three years starting around 4th or 5th grade. I had BSC everything. Posters all over my room, the calendar, the game. I even went all OCD and starting keeping an inventory of all my books and when I read them. I don’t remember what number I was up to when I stopped, but it was up there.

My favorite character was Stacy. I would have given anything to be Stacy. But I also liked Mary Anne since she was pretty much like me. It’s so funny to read that website, though, because Stacy is SUCH a bitch. I never once saw that. But, man, she really is a snobby bitch.
